“NBnew look canopies for Platforms 12-14 at Sydney’s Central Station are taking shape. They’ll replace the previous structures that had to be removed to allow for construction of the new Sydney Metro station being built below.

Most of the structural steelwork for the canopies was prefabricated off-site in Kurri-Kurri, NSW (the same yard used to fabricate the new roof over the Northern Concourse), and then delivered to site in 19-metre-long x 6-metre-wide sections.

By fabricating the sections off-site, the team has been able to better utilise space in the tight construction area at Central – improving scheduling and minimising construction impacts. Sections are craned into position and fixed together, then services and cladding are installed.

The total weight of the structural steel is 268 tonnes, and the total roof area of the canopies approximately 3400 square metres.

Just over 75% of the structural steel has now been installed, with the remainder scheduled for the coming months.

Platform 12 has been kept operational throughout the build, while Platforms 13 and 14 will be fully reinstated late this year to support intercity train services. Platform 15, which was only used for maintenance, will not be reinstated. ”
