“A big day for our mighty Dame Whina Cooper tunnel boring machine (TBM).
Tonight,  Link Alliance contractors start 24/7 welding works to connect the bits of the TBM’s shield together.

As we’ve mentioned the big bits of the machine- the cutterhead, front shield and middle shield, have been brought back to the Mt Eden tunnel portal after the machine bore through to mid-town Auckland where the Aotea Station is being constructed. Now comes the task of joining the jigsaw- and that should take a fortnight.

The last bit- the tailskin- arrived last night.

Just left to arrive are the TBM gantries which are still slowly moving back through the tunnel to Mt Eden Station where they will be realigned and connected to the shield.

The start of the boring of the second and final TBM tunnel is now scheduled to begin in May. You can follow progress when that happens at https://www.digcrl.co.nz/
